Calculate Star Strength, Moon Position, and Lagna Cleanliness for Auspicious Events (Single Profile)
Tara Balam and Chandra Balam are two fundamental pillars of Muhurta (Vedic electional astrology). Tara Balam measures the strength of the day's Nakshatra relative to your birth Nakshatra, while Chandra Balam measures the strength of the Moon's transit relative to your birth Moon sign (Rashi). Together with Lagna Shuddhi (ascendant purity), they determine whether a given day is auspicious for you.The technique counts forward from your Janma Nakshatra to wherever the planet sits today, and assigns one of nine 'Tara' classifications to that count. Each Tara carries a distinct quality — some bring fortune, health, and success; others warn of obstacles, enemies, or danger.
This free calculator instantly checks all three factors for a single person — perfect for marriage, roka, House Warmings, Namkaran, business launch, and trip muhurta. It also flags malefic planets in the 1st house (Lagna) that can spoil an otherwise good muhurta.

Understanding the calculation helps you verify results and use this Muhurta tool with confidence. Here is the simple Vedic method:
Count from your birth Nakshatra to the daily Nakshatra, both inclusive. For example, if your birth Nakshatra is Jyeshtha (18) and today's Nakshatra is Purva Bhadrapada (25), the raw count is 8 (25 − 18 = 7, +1 = 8).
Divide the count by 9 and take the remainder. If the remainder is 0, treat it as 9. So 8 ÷ 9 = remainder 8 → Mitra Tara. The 9 Taras are: Janma (1), Sampat (2), Vipat (3), Kshema (4), Pratyak (5), Sadhana (6), Naidhana (7), Mitra (8), Parama Mitra (9).
Count from your birth Rashi to the daily Moon Rashi. The 4th, 8th, and 12th positions are considered inauspicious (Ashtama Chandra is the worst). All other positions are neutral or auspicious.
The event's Ascendant (Lagna) should ideally be a benefic sign — Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius, or Pisces. Malefic planets (Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu) in the 1st house spoil the Lagna.
A muhurta is auspicious only when the Tara Balam is good (Sampat, Kshema, Sadhana, Mitra, Parama Mitra), Chandra Balam is not 4/8/12, and the Lagna is clean.

In Vedic astrology, no auspicious event should be started without checking the Tara Balam and Chandra Balam of the people involved. Even if the day's Panchang looks perfect, an unfavorable Tara (like Janma, Vipat, Pratyak, or Naidhana) can bring obstacles, delays, or unwanted results. Similarly, the Moon's transit in the 4th, 8th, or 12th house from your birth Rashi causes mental stress, health issues, and financial loss. This is why traditional pandits always ask for the birth Nakshatra and Moon sign before fixing a date.
Our Tara Balam & Chandra Balam Calculator (Single Profile) automates this ancient wisdom for modern users. It checks nine Taras, Moon transit houses, and Lagna Shuddhi in a single click and gives a personal verdict. It is ideal for:
Tara Balam is the strength of the day's Nakshatra relative to a person's birth Nakshatra. It is counted from the birth star to the daily star and divided by 9. The nine Taras are Janma, Sampat, Vipat, Kshema, Pratyak, Sadhana, Naidhana, Mitra, and Parama Mitra. Good Taras are Sampat, Kshema, Sadhana, Mitra, and Parama Mitra.
Chandra Balam refers to the position of the Moon's transit relative to a person's birth Moon sign. The 4th, 8th, and 12th positions are considered inauspicious. The 8th position, known as Ashtama Chandra, is the most harmful and should be strictly avoided for any auspicious event.
Lagna Shuddhi means the Ascendant (Lagna) of the event should be a benefic sign and should not have malefic planets like Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu, or Ketu in the 1st house. If any of these malefic planets are in the 1st house, the Lagna is considered impure and the muhurta is spoiled.
This calculator checks the Tara Balam, Chandra Balam, and Lagna Shuddhi for a single person. For joint marriage muhurta (bride & groom), please use our two-profile calculator.
Auspicious Taras: Sampat (2), Kshema (4), Sadhana (6), Mitra (8), Parama Mitra (9).
Inauspicious Taras: Janma (1), Vipat (3), Pratyak (5), Naidhana (7). These should be avoided for important events.
No, gender does not affect the calculation of Tara Balam or Chandra Balam. The calculation depends only on the birth Nakshatra, birth Rashi, and the current planetary positions. The gender field is provided for personal reference and future astrological analysis.
