What is Tithi?
In Vedic astrology, Tithi is one of the five elements of Panchang (Hindu calendar). It represents a lunar day based on the angular relationship between the Sun and Moon. Each tithi lasts approximately 0.948 days (23 hours 37 minutes), and there are 15 tithis in each lunar fortnight (paksha). Live Tithi Calculator

Note: The same Hindu Tithi Calendar For 15 Lunar Days name repeats in both pakshas. For example, Pratipada occurs as 1st tithi of Shukla Paksha and 16th tithi of Krishna Paksha. The energy quality remains similar but with waxing/waning moon influences.
Tithi Categories: The 5 Groups
Nanda means "joy" or "bliss." These tithis are considered highly auspicious for starting new ventures, marriages, and celebrations. Activities begun on Nanda tithis tend to bring happiness and success. They are ruled by Agni (fire) and are particularly favorable for fire-related rituals.
Bhadra means "auspicious" or "fortunate." These tithis provide protection and stability. They are excellent for activities requiring perseverance and long-term commitment. Ruled by Brahma, these tithis support creative endeavors and relationship building.
Jaya means "victory." These tithis are powerful for overcoming obstacles and achieving success in competitive situations. They carry energy of triumph and are favorable for spiritual practices aimed at conquering inner demons.
Rikta means "empty" or "void." These tithis are suitable for removing obstacles, clearing negative energies, and letting go of what no longer serves. While not ideal for beginnings, they're perfect for completions and cleansing rituals.
Purna means "complete" or "full." These tithis represent fulfillment and completion. Purnima (full moon) and Amavasya (new moon) are the most significant. They're ideal for completion of projects, spiritual practices, and harvesting the fruits of labor.
Practical Applications of Tithis
1. Auspicious Timings (Muhurta)
Tithi is crucial in selecting auspicious timings for important life events. Each tithi has specific energies that support different types of activities:
- Marriage: Prefer Nanda (1,6,11) and Bhadra (2,7,12) tithis
- House Warming: Avoid Rikta (4,9,14) tithis
- Business Start: Jaya (3,8,13) tithis for competitive businesses
- Education Start: Nanda tithis, especially Pratipada
2. Spiritual Practices
Specific tithis amplify spiritual practices:
- Ekadashi (11th tithi): Fasting for Vishnu devotion
- Chaturthi (4th tithi): Ganesha worship for obstacle removal
- Ashtami (8th tithi): Durga/Kali worship for protection
- Purnima (15th waxing): Full moon meditation and charity
- Amavasya (15th waning): Ancestor worship (Shraddha)

Traditional farmers still use tithis for planting and harvesting:
- Planting: Waxing moon tithis (Shukla Paksha)
