Solah Somvar Vrat Katha (16 Monday Fasting Story)
The Story of Solah Somvar Vrat
Once upon a time, in a prosperous kingdom, there lived a wealthy merchant named Dharampal. He had everything one could desire - wealth, property, and all worldly comforts - except for a child. This absence of progeny made him and his wife extremely unhappy.
One day, a sage visited their home. The merchant and his wife served the sage with great devotion. Pleased with their hospitality, the sage asked about their well-being. The couple shared their sorrow about not having children.
The sage advised them to observe the Solah Somvar Vrat (16 Monday fast) with complete faith and devotion. He explained the proper method of observing this vrat:
Clean the worship area and place an idol or picture of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
Offer bilva leaves, flowers, fruits, and light a lamp with pure ghee.
Chant the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra and other Shiva prayers.
Observe a strict fast throughout the day, breaking it only the next morning after sunrise.
Perform this vrat for 16 consecutive Mondays with unwavering devotion."
The merchant and his wife followed the sage's instructions with full dedication. As they completed the 16th Monday fast, Goddess Parvati appeared in the merchant's dream and blessed them with a child. In due time, the merchant's wife gave birth to a beautiful and healthy son.
The child brought immense joy to the family. When the boy came of age, the merchant arranged his marriage to a suitable girl from another wealthy family. However, the bride's family was skeptical about the merchant's sudden good fortune after years of childlessness.
To test the merchant's claims, they secretly placed a live coal in the boy's hand during the wedding ceremony. To everyone's astonishment, the boy held the burning coal without any harm to his hand. This miracle convinced everyone of the divine power of the Solah Somvar Vrat.
From that day onward, the fame of this vrat spread far and wide. It is believed that anyone who observes this fast with pure devotion will have their wishes fulfilled, whether it be for progeny, marriage, health, wealth, or spiritual progress.
