Maa Skandamata - Fifth Form of Goddess Durga

Maa Skandamata

स्कन्दमाता · Mother of Skanda

ॐ देवी स्कन्दमात्रे नमः॥

Maa Skandamata is the fifth manifestation of Goddess Durga, worshipped on Navratri Day 5. She is the divine mother of Lord Skanda (Kartikeya / Murugan), tenderly holding her baby son in her lap. She is seated on a lotus, rides a lion, and has four arms — two holding lotuses (symbolizing purity), one in abhaya mudra (fearlessness), and one granting boons. She presides over the Vishuddha Chakra (throat chakra) and represents pure knowledge, truthful speech, maternal protection, and divine wisdom.

Story & Spiritual Significance

Divine Motherhood: After Lord Kartikeya (Skanda) was born to destroy the demon Tarakasura, Goddess Parvati assumed the form of Skandamata to nurture and protect her divine son. She is the ultimate symbol of unconditional maternal love, care, and protection.

Vishuddha Chakra: She presides over the throat chakra, awakening pure speech, truthful expression, creativity, clear communication, and the power of mantra sadhana.

Ruling Planet: Mercury (Budh). Her worship removes Budh dosha, enhances intelligence, memory, speech, writing skills, business acumen, and success in education/examinations.

Symbolism: Lotus seat represents rising above worldly impurities. Holding baby Skanda signifies protection of innocence, divine knowledge, and the nurturing of potential.
