The Second House is commonly referred to as the House of Possessions. While this speaks to that which we own, it’s not limited simply to tangible things. 2nd House in Vedic Astrology
In Vedic astrology, the 2nd house is called ‘Dhana Bhava’ - house of wealth and ‘Vak sthana’ - house of speech. The 2nd house is associated with the Aries sign in the zodiac which is ruled by Venus.
Also, according to Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, 2nd house and 7th houses are called maraka houses or death inflicting houses. This is because these are 12th to the houses of longevity (3rd and 8th houses).
Role of the 2nd House in Astrology
From the first house of self, we move to the second house of resources required to sustain the self. When we say ascendant is about identity, then the 2nd house will provide the resources to sustain and maintain that identity.
The 2nd house in astrology is a basic house of survival in astrology. It all deals with the basic needs of a human being, be it food, money, close family members, etc. This is the house where one feels secure/insecure in life. Security is a feeling of certainty that all your basic needs are getting fulfilled and everything is fine. Hence, to be secure, everyone will hoard money and other tangible assets. From this house, we will get an idea of the perception of the individual towards life.
The 2nd House Represents Financial matters
In Vedic Astrology, the second house is called Dhana bhava, which means house of money and it gives a clue of the financial position of the person. It talks about the potential of making money and how well one handles money. It also tells you about what is the source of finance and how one saves/spends that. It includes accumulated wealth in terms of liquid cash, jewelry, gold, silver, precious stones, fixed deposits, bonds, stocks, etc. Generally, land and house do not come under the ambit of 2nd house. These are represented by the 4th house.
The 2nd house is the first house of the financial trine or artha trikona, other houses being 6th house and 10th house. The 2nd house represents the resources, the 6th house signifies obstacles and hurdles, which one has to overcome and finally the 10th house signifies the final goal or place of action. Therefore, one has to analyze these houses in totality.
2nd House Shows Your Material Possessions
The second house shows material possessions you will acquire through your skills. Generally, we accumulate or hoard based on greed and fear factor. Even though we know that we cannot use more than required, still we keep on accumulating. Because it gives emotional safety and in turn gives material stability. Essentially, this is because of one’s perception of life.
Generally, everyone will have a habit or obsession with accumulating things that give emotional satisfaction. It may be like collecting gold items, jewelry, clothes, shoes, accessories, fashion items, art material, antique items, or just about anything. This somehow makes one happy.
When we say possessions, even intangible resources we own are part of this house. It will include any creative skills and expertise. These personal resources are used to acquire material wealth. The skill sets include acting, singing, creative writing, driving, coding, cooking, or any other skill sets which you will use to enhance your identity.
2nd House Denotes Family and Childhood
The second house deals with childhood, family, and the value system inherited from parents and ancestors. As a child one imitates parents and society. This is the silent learning period. Early education received from parents, especially from the mother can be seen from this house. And, we will adapt these learnings in the future. This is called ’sanskaras’ or value systems.
The 2nd house represents the immediate family which includes parents, siblings, and close relatives. It gives a clue as to what kind of environment one gets in childhood. A growing child needs proper nourishment for the body and mind. A good environment with proper care and love nourishes the child, which will have a positive impact throughout one’s life.
However, if one doesn’t get family love and attention, it often leads to addictive patterns. In other cases, when parents themselves are addicted to any substances, it may impact children with long-lasting problems. In either case, it will impact children with a poor self-image, chronic depression, emotional trauma, anxiety, loneliness, or fear.. These problems will be imprinted in the mind and can lead to severe problems later in life. Malefic planets in this house can create a lot of disturbance in early childhood.
Food is Represented by the Second House
The 2nd house signifies the food and drinking habits of a person. Again it depends on which planets are influencing this house. If benefic and strong planets influence, then the person will be nurtured with a good environment. And, negative influence can turn them into alcohol or drugs.
2nd House Talks About Speech
The body part associated with the 2nd house is the face and in particular the mouth, eyes, nose, and tongue. Therefore, this house signifies most of the things related to the mouth and vocal cords. This house is called ‘vak sthana’, which means the house of speech. It tells you about the ability of verbal capabilities and how one uses them effectively. If it is positively influenced, one will have an attractive voice. Benefic planets can influence one to become a singer, creative artist, writer, etc. Again, the second house only shows the resources. How you utilize those resources can be seen from the 3rd house. For example, you may have a good voice (2nd house), but your ability to effectively communicate and interact with others has to be looked at in the 3rd house. So, 2nd and 3rd houses are interlinked with each other.
On the other hand, malefic planets can make one’s speech harsh and hurtful which can create conflict and resentfulness. Words spoken with negative intent or harsh speech can destroy many relationships.
2nd House is the House of Restriction
The 2nd house is where one is restricted. Here restriction is towards material possessions. Family, money and worldly matters make one be in a state of confinement. When desires turn into greed, it will result in unhappiness and misery. It is nothing but self-imprisonment. It is the opposite of the 8th house, where the 8th deals with seeking freedom in a spiritual sense.
Significator (Karaka) for the 2nd House
Jupiter is thesignificator for the 2nd House. The significator is like the judge, who approves the case. Therefore, Jupiter in the chart should be checked in order to judge the 2nd house.
Body Parts and Diseases Related to the 2nd House
Body parts represented by this house are eyes, face, mouth, cheeks, teeth, nose, tongue. The afflicted second house can create diseases related to eyes, dental problems, all types of ENT complications, cataracts, speech disorders, stammering, dumbness, blindness.
The 2nd House in Mundane Astrology
The 2nd house in mundane astrology represents national wealth, banks, stock exchanges, gold reserves, general trade, agricultural products, the financial well being of people.
Planets in the Second House
Planets in the 2nd house and placement of its lord show the source of finance. Each planet will have its own effect on the second house. The problem comes when the conflict of energy happens. When planets with opposing energies come together, it will affect the native. For example, enemy planets like Sun-Saturn, Mercury-Mars etc can create many problems. These planets placed together in the second house usually create many ups and downs in money matters. Also, it is not good to have 6th, 8th, or 12th lords in this house.
